01 / 03 · Badlands, noon shadow Desert · Silver gelatin print Everyone photographs the badlands at dawn. I wanted the light nobody uses: straight down at noon, when every fold in the rock becomes a black line and the ridges go to paper white. It is the highest-contrast negative I have ever printed.
The print is made at grade 1 with a long burn on the sky, and it is the one I bring to workshops to show what dodging can and cannot do.
