Beartooth, storm clearing

Rain moving off the plateau at ten thousand feet, the tripod weighted with a pack of rocks.

Beartooth 1 01 / 03 · Beartooth, storm clearing Mountains · Silver gelatin print

The Beartooth Plateau in August throws a storm most afternoons and clears it by six. I waited out this one under the tailgate and set up as the last of it pulled east over the lake basin, with the wind still strong enough that the tripod needed a pack of rocks hung from the center column.

The negative is dense in the sky and thin in the water, which is why it took eleven work prints to get the balance right. The final print splits the difference at grade 2.5.
